Russian Lacquer Box from Palekh: Spectacular, Large Console Box of a Folklore Scene Boasting Stunning Detail and Extraordinary Gilt Gold Details. Russian lacquer art developed from the art of icon painting. After the collapse of Imperial Russia, icon painters/artists needed a way to make a living. Thus, the craft of making papier-mâché decorative boxes and panels developed, the items were lacquered and then hand painted by the artists, often with scenes from folk tales. Offered is a spectacular example from Palekh of extraordinary beauty. remarkable detail and exquisite artistry. Lidded box is fully hand painted and resplendent in extensive gilt gold highlights that the lid appears to shimmer in the light. As with all the boxes in auction, box has the usual rich red lacquered interior. This piece has been signed by the artist, and on verso, the artist and studio also signed in gold. Fine scrolling surrounds the box not only framing the art of the lid but surrounding the middle sides of the box. 13 x 10 x 3". Excellent condition. It is becoming increasingly difficult to obtain lacquer boxes of this quality from Russia. Estimated Value $1,000 - UP

Two Russian Decoupage Lacquer Boxes from Palekh of the Russian Imperial Romanov Family and a Superior Portrait of Tsar Nicholas II (1868-1918) Nicholas II, the last Emperor of Russia along with his family the subject of more conspiracies, books and films than any other ruler of Russia. Though he had been deposed, his crown and his name stolen from him, his family imprisoned, months later, they were all brutally assassinated. Czar Nicholas is frequently the subject of Russian lacquer boxes, and this decoupage is from one of his most famous state portraits and is truly stunning. It has been beautifully enhanced with intricate hand painted gold gilt throughout his crown, his chain of office, his scepter, his orb & cross and his sword belt. The box lid is accented with a gilt silver scroll border. 1¼ x 3 x 4" and in mint condition.
The second box is of the entire Imperial Romamov family from one of their many painted family portraits. Stately image with all the lace, sashes, buttons, crowns jewelry and bullion are all accented in gold and likewise bordered in silver gilt matching the Tsar's. 1¼ x 3 x 4" and also in mint condition. (1672-1725) It is impossible to study the history of Russia without a deep dive into Peter The Great, proclaimed "Emperor of all Russia" in 1721. His reforms as ruler heavily influenced by Western Europe, notably France even in dress and established St. Petersburg as the capitol, which it was until 1918.
Peter I is celebrated in this beautiful decoupage lacquer box from one of his most famous portraits with hand painted gold enhancements not only within the image but in the gilt details along the sides. Russian Lacquer Box: One Vintage, Elaborately Hand Painted Box From Mstera, One from Fedoskino of Magic Carpet and Firebird. 1.) Vintage Russian lacquer box from Mstera, a small 17th Century Russian settlement known for their unique artistic approach to their crafts and icons very much evoking the 15 and 16th centuries. Wonderful example here of folklore boasting incredible hand painted details of such precision and an unusual perspective through the window that impresses. Further, the hand painted gilt scroll work surrounding the image is unrivaled in this auction. Box, pre-owned and slightly used the lower right corner shows a small chip at corner tip outside of the border work that has been touched up as well as light surface scratches on base; all hardly visible. But the image itself is pristine, again a masterwork of astonishing detail and worthy of any collection. 1½ x 5½ x 7"

Russian Lacquer Boxes: Three Lovely Examples of Russian Lacquer from Fedoskino Including Box with Exceptional Folklore Art. Russian lacquer boxes are prized the world over for their artistry and craftsmanship and these three pieces from Fedoskino are no exception: 1.) The best in the lot is a large, unusually shaped box of a Russian folk tale absolutely beautifully hand painted with gilt gold touches and a very elaborate double row of elaborate scroll work that is in both gilt gold and gilt silver expertly executed. In near to mint condition (one tiny ding outside edge of lip, signed boldly by artist on base and measures 1½ x 5 x 7". 2.) Rectangular box of maid standing next to a tree beautifully hand painted with her sarafan in gold gilt. 1½ x 6 x 2½" in very fine condition noting a discoloration in the sarafan. Bottom of box has felt paper liner but lifts out with no glue residue present. 3.) Beautiful small pot with brightly painted figures with gold leaf inlay of a boot vendor showing his work to two ladies. Pot is beautiful, near to mint only in that the bottom of pot has a navy non-skid fabric glued which cannot be removed but does not show unless turned upside down. Russian Lacquer Boxes: Four Gorgeous Seasonal, Wintry Scenes Including a Fantastic Russian Santa "Ded Moroz" and Snowman. Four terrific Russian lacquer boxes that certainly convey the Holiday or wintry scenes. 1.) Great box of a Russian Santa, "Ded Moroz" or some artistic cross between the two because there is no tall staff and in red and blue. Nevertheless a wonderful decoupage beautifully enhanced with hand painted gilt gold, red and green. 1¼ x 4 x 3" from the Russia Collection founded in 1991 to preserve Russian art. 2.) Two boxes with a troika of horses, pulling a sleigh, the drivers in blue which hint at the traditional "Ded Moroz". Beautiful gilt gold enhancements to both: 1¼ x 6½ x 3¼" and 1¼ x 4 x 3" this one also made by the co-operative, The Russia Collection. 3. Finally a miniature fully hand painted box of couple in a sleigh being pulled by horses, each clearly in Holiday apparel. 1 x 2 x 3" and a marvelous miniature work. All four boxes mint.
